Homemade Magnifying Glass

Materials

  • Empty water bottle
  • Water
  • Scissors
  • Pen or marker

Directions

  1. Draw a circle over the curved part of the water bottle.
  2. Cut out your circle. It should not be flat.
  3. Pour some water into your disk and be sure not to spill!
  4. Hover your homemade magnifying glass over different things to see how it magnifies!

Explanation

The curve of the water bottle creates a curved disk called a convex lens. A convex lens will warp the point where your eyes see an object and make it appear bigger than it really is. By adding the water, the light that passes through is bent inwards, creating a lens effect and enlarging the size of the letters.
